Honey Bun Had An Eye Surgery!

CATS ON TUESDAY
My honey has a mishaps.

The other day we noticed that she had excess eye secretion. We tried to clean it up but it still comes out excessively, and the left eye more than her right eye. And to make things worse, she did a little bit more of scratching than she ought to. The minute I saw she can hardly open her left eye, off she went to the her not-so-favorite friend, the vet.

Apparently, her eyes got an infection from her scratchings, and had turned into an ulcer. And the vet told us she had to do an eye surgery! "Nooooooo.....!" I exclaimed. "I can't let you do that! Don't touch her eye!" I was more than panic! I cannot let the vet took her eyes out...ouch!

"Don't worry," the vet said. I am not taking her eyes off!" He later explained patiently by a drawing on a white board that they only need to remove an outer layer where the ulcer is. Then they will sew the eyelids (ouuccchh....ouccchhh!) together and within two weeks, with supplements, a new layer will be formed.

I definitely do not have a choice. The consequences of not doing a surgery is, the ulcer will turn into a bigger infection and then, she might lose an eye...oouuuccchhhh!

With a heavy heart, but a 'forced' positive mind, I let the vet took care of her eyes. I picked her up the next day, and her eyes looked terrible. Oh dear, what have I done? Her beautiful eyes!! My heart goes out to her. How can I make it up>

I need to give her 2 eye supplements a day, an eye ointment, and whatever other blue capsules on a scheduled date. She looks better after almost a week.
Please pray for Honeybun!

P/s. If anyone has Persians and experienced how to best take care of their excess eye secretions, I'd appreciate a tip or two! TIA!

Poor little Honey Bun. I'm so glad you did the right thing and had her treated. She'll be beautiful in no time at all. I know one good thing for her: plenty of cuddles and treats. And one bad thing: don't give her Eye-mo or anything meant for human eyes. It's OK to wipe a sore cat eye with a little with an otherwise healthy adult kitty but when cats have ulcers etc these products can do damage.

Oah, poor Honeybun! We send you some healing poors....poor...poooor!

Luna is a Maine Coon but she also has a watery eye. We always remove the secretion and put some Euphrasia eyedrops in it.Sometimes it is better and sometimes not.

Get well soon!!!

Hi Chahya

Yes, she's getting much more attention now, but I can't let her out in the garden too long, until her eyr is properly healed. TQ!

Hi Katz

On non-persian cats, I normally treats their eyes with salt water, and it works like wonders. On persians, sometimes ok, sometimes not. I bought one tear-free lotion, but not so effective. I'll take note on that 'human' ointment thing. Thanks!

Hi Luna

Thanks! I may try that euphrasia drop if I can find it here. My Oreo and Minty does not have too much problem, Honey is the flat-face type, maybe that's why. I guess the one with paralel eyes must be worse..?

Poor sweet Honeybun! I've only had 2 persians and neither had runny eys, so I don't have any great advice, just hugs & pats for Honeybun.

Poor Honey, that's terrible. That's the second case I read now amongst our little COT group. Criz Lai had exactly the same problems with one of his cats, http://crizcats.blogspot.com/, it's just described under Photohunters. but there was no operation.

Awwww...the poor baby! I'm glad tho, you caught the infection in time and her little eye could be saved. Unfortunately, I found a stray that wasn't so lucky; well, he's lucky *I* found him, I suppose, but he lost his eye (the infection was too bad to save it)....

Good thoughts for your HoneyBun; she's gonna be just fine!!

Hello Julie

Yes, Honey is so brave and she handles it like a true mature adult cat, and she's only a baby, or a teenager in cat years. Only problem is to get her to swallow the 2 pills everday. Peanut butter coated!!

Hi Tricia

Thanks! Good for your persian cats. My Oreo and Minty also do not have this problem.

Hello Gattina

Thanks for the link. I will check out soon to see if I can learn anything from her experience. Honey looks much better today! :)

Hi Mo

Yes, luckily I sent her to the vet in time. My only regret is that I didn't sent her sooner..but who would have thought..

Your story reminds me of my friend who saved a cat that had one eye out hanging. The vet had to take it out, even the other eye too. She is blind, but the fattest (her belly almost touched the ground)and most 'demanding queen' of the house..lol! She's also so lucky that my friend found her, just like you. :)
